Proof, a craft-stick tensegrity table, seen from an angle against a dark background

Proof

I saw a tensegrity table and had to know: could I build one out of craft sticks?

Originally, it was supposed to be a simple table to hold drinks and darts. I liked the challenge of making something that seemed to defy gravity.

But as I worked, I became less interested in simply making it function and more interested in how good I could make it look. I kept experimenting with the structure, trying to make it more interesting without losing what made it work.

By the time I was nearing completion, I knew I wanted to keep it for a long time. I started sanding and finishing it with the same care I would give a woodworking project.

Years later, when I entered it in an art exhibition, I finally gave it a name: Proof.

It had proven I could build it, that something functional could also be beautiful, and, thanks to my son and his friends, that it was stronger than I ever intended.

Looking back, I can see that Proof was also an early step toward discovering what craft sticks could become in my hands.
